College Prep
Small class size and individualized attention – a hallmark of the entire Academy experience – continue in Upper School and enhance the young adult’s preparation for college. Learning in grades 9-12 is designed to be a set of experiences that guides growth and expands one’s range of knowledge about the changing world while also preparing students to thrive in that world.
In our upper school curriculum, advanced and honors courses present college-level material that often earns students credit once they enroll in college.
Upper School Course Description Guide
Disciplines, Electives, Clubs & Athletics
An upper-schooler’s needs and interests shape their choices for courses and activities, whether it is Jazz Band or South African History, Advanced Computer Topics or a fifth year of Chinese. Each discipline offers a wide range of classes as well as electives and one-semester classes. Some choose to participate in the East Asian Institute that has traveled to China with hundreds of our students and faculty over the past 15 years.
Academy sponsors more than 30 different clubs for upper school students including student publications, affinity groups based on ethnicity and clubs based on shared interests such as debate, robotics and music. All clubs are student-led with faculty sponsors.
Additionally, Academy fields 23 interscholastic athletic programs, providing all students with the chance to compete and participate.
Leadership & Service Program
Growth opportunities in leadership and service are part of everyday life in the Academy classroom and extend into our wide range of extracurricular activities.
Teaching altruistic leadership is the mission of the Columbus Academy Service Department, which is chaired by Christy Bening. Service activities occur both on and off campus and are designed to let students invest their time and energy into the improvement of the communities that surround them and make a positive difference.
The officers of the Service Board are elected by their peers and have the authority to direct the selected projects.
