A Personal Process: The Art and Life of Toshiko Takaezu will offer a close look at diverse styles and divergent forms and techniques Takaezu discovered through a lifetime of artistic exploration. Known primarily for her rounded ceramic forms, this exhibition will feature Takaezu’s works in clay, fiber, painting and bronze.
Takaezu’s artwork is in the collections of museums worldwide including The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto (Japan), The Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. This will be the largest exhibition of Takaezu’s artwork in Ohio since 2009 with pieces on loan from the Zanesville Museum of Art, the Toshiko Takaezu Studio Project and the collections of former students.
“Toshiko was a creative force for decades, infusing the aesthetic of Zen Buddhism and Abstract Expressionism onto her distinctive closed forms,” states Columbus Academy ceramics teacher Andy Rahe, a former Takaezu apprentice. “Simultaneously beautiful and powerful, her pieces exude a quiet confidence that viewers feel and appreciate upon first glance. Toshiko’s artwork is incredibly moving, and it’s my hope that people will leave the show feeling inspired and full of wonder.”
Founded in 1911, Columbus Academy is a PreK-12 coed independent school that views artistic pursuits as an integral part of education and considers creativity to be the fuel that drives learning. To learn more, please click here.
