Over the course of two days at Firestone Country Club in Akron on October 13-14, 2024, our varsity girls golf team led the field of Division II teams en route to winning its third state championship in a row. After leading by 11 strokes following the first round, Academy finished with a 27-stroke advantage over runner-up Madeira. Three Vikings finished among the top-25 competitors including individual champion Eva L. with a two-day score of 143 (71-72), followed by Caroline Z. in a tie for eighth place with a 158 (78-80) and Meera S. with a 177 (92-85), good for a share of 25th overall. Rosemary J. placed 36th with a 190 (97-93) and Claire Z. rounded out the team score with a 194 (97-97). Eva’s individual state crown is just the second in program history (Morgan Ransom '12 in 2010) and the school’s first in golf since 2020 (Stephen Ma '23).

At a special assembly on November 18, Head of School Melissa Soderberg welcomed everyone before inviting a round of applause in honor of our three-peat state champions. "Three state championships in a row led by their coach Maggie Freytag, who's done such a great job leading girls golf since its inception in 2019." Maggie has guided the Vikes to four-straight appearances in the state tournament, which includes district and league titles each year dating back to the 2021 season.

Director of Athletics Jason Singleton then shared some additional season highlights for the team which included championships at the league, sectional and district levels. "As a team the girls were undefeated this year, which is phenomenal." The team then ventured out front of Academy Hall where our facilities team assisted the golfers in taking turns raising the flag atop the pole.

Eva, a first team all-state pick and Player of the Year selection in the district and conference as a sophomore, was also crowned individual champion at the sectional and district tournaments. Caroline, the group's lone senior and a Bucknell University commit, closed out her prep career with second team all-state accolades to go along with being a first-team pick in the district and league. Claire, a freshman, was named second team all-district and all-league, while sophomore Rosemary earned a spot on the third and second teams in those categories, respectively. Also earning postseason awards were junior Ella T. as third team all-district alongside sophomore Meera, who also received honorable-mention status in the league with classmate Isabella H.

With the conclusion of the 2024 fall sports season, Columbus Academy has now totaled 100 state championships as a school including 58 individual crowns and 42 team titles.
