On August 27, 2008, The Columbus Academy will begin its 98th school year. Prior to that first day of classes, orientation for new Middle and Upper School students and parents will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday, August 25, in the school’s Schoedinger Theatre. That event will coincide with the Lower School’s Meet the Teacher and Ice Cream Social – also at 5 p.m. – on the bus circle beside Academy Hall. Book distribution for the Upper School will be held on Tuesday, August 26, starting in Schoedinger Theatre at the following times: 8 a.m. for ninth-graders, 9 a.m. for tenth-graders, 10 a.m. for eleventh-graders and 11 a.m. for twelfth-graders. More back-to-school information will be arriving in August. Click here for the school calendar.
All students in grades 7-12 who plan on participating in fall sports need to make sure all online school health forms are completed before the first practice (click here to see start dates and contact info for each sport). These forms include the Emergency Medical Release and Travel Form, the Health History Form and the Over the Counter Medication Authorization Form (click here to access). No students will be permitted to participate in any school activity, including athletic practices, until all forms are completed.
A record-setting year for Columbus Academy in the National Merit Scholarship Program ended with five National Merit Scholars from CA’s Class of 2008. Recently joining Linda Mullin (Kenyon College), Liz Nick (Northwestern University) and Kirun Sankaran (Ohio State University) as Academy’s 2008 National Merit Scholars were Nate Vonder Haar (Case Western Reserve University) and Joey Yang (Rice University). All of the National Merit Scholarships were sponsored by the scholars’ respective colleges except for Sankaran’s, which was sponsored by Fifth Third Bank. The five Scholars were part of a school-record 15 National Merit Semifinalists and 13 Finalists, both figures being the most of any school in central Ohio and the most of any independent school in the entire state.
From June 14-22, a group of Columbus Academy students and faculty members traveled to New Orleans to help rebuild homes still in need of repair after Hurricane Katrina. Led by John Wuorinen ’80 – former dean of students and new admissions director – the participants learned safe techniques and habits in renovation projects while also experiencing cultural activities. All of the Academy students who made the trip satisfied their graduation requirement of 45 off-campus hours of service. Click here to see Wuorinen’s photos from the trip.
