Academy Alumni in the News
Columbus Academy alumni Soham Joshi ’22 and Raaghav Malik ’22 were recently awarded U.S. Patent No. 11,919,159-B1 by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office for their invention of a robotic glove designed to teach sign language through guided manual motions. This promising product started with seed money from our school’s QuestWorks program, which provides small grants to students who wish to pursue independent passion projects. Soham and Raaghav worked with WilmerHale Law Firm, who awarded the team with the Patent Application Award at Invention Convention U.S. Nationals 2021 when they were in 11th grade. The team also earned Best in Show at Invention Convention Globals 2021! Raaghav is currently a student at Yale University while Soham attends The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Both were featured with a prototype of their S.E.N.S.E. glove on the cover of Academy’s Winter 2022 magazine that can be viewed at columbusacademy.org/magazinewinter2022.

Be 1 of 1,000 Vikings!
Our goal for this week's All Day 4 CA is to inspire more than 1,000 Vikings across the country and around the world to come together in an awesome display of Academy spirit and support! More than just a day of giving, All Day 4 CA celebrates the bonds that exist between alumni, faculty/staff, students and families. If you would like to make a donation in honor or memory of a special Academy teacher, coach, classmate, family member or friend who was behind you during your time at Columbus Academy or beyond, we will pass along your tribute message.

Look for an email this Thursday, April 18, at 10:00 a.m. EDT with the link to participate. During these vital 25 hours, each and every Viking counts. Your participation, whether large or small, is an inspiration to today's students knowing they have the incredible Academy community behind them. Check out this year’s matches and challenges being offered to encourage everyone to join in! If you have questions about this important day of giving benefiting the Annual Fund, please contact the Development Office. Thank you, and Go Vikes!

What Makes a Thick Institution
In early 2024, Head of School Melissa Soderberg sent an insightful email to school families about the recognition of Columbus Academy as a "thick institution." A term coined by New York Times columnist David Brooks, this refers to a place or a ritual that leaves a mark on people.

In late February, the school celebrated David Block's 50 years of teaching with an art show of former students called Chip Off the OL' Block (view photos). Throughout the evening, generations of Academy alumni, families and friends gathered to acknowledge how impactful teaching can provide lasting impressions for future endeavors. Through the recognition and celebration of the event attendees, this is one of many examples in which Columbus Academy is a thick institution.

As Melissa notes, "it's rare to have two teachers who have dedicated their lives to students for 50-plus years in David Block and John Exline '64 who is in his 56th year of service to Columbus Academy. It's also rare for a school like ours to be strong enough and stable enough over its entire existence (113 years) to have excellent teachers in every decade who carry forward the best qualities that make us a good school dedication to students and respect for faculty, above all else."
